About CMC

Christian Medical College (CMC), located in the small town of Vellore, Tamil Nadu, was founded in 1900 by an American missionary Dr. Ida S. Scudder who witnessed 3 women dying in childbirth. She began CMC as a one-bed clinic which grew into a 300-bed hospital spread across 6 campuses. Her vision was to train women to care for women. Over time training began in nursing, medicine, allied health and postgraduate courses in a broad range of medical specialties.

CMC grew to become one of India’s top institutions in clinical care, training and research. The academic curriculum is thoughtfully crafted to promote critical thinking, the value of service, ethical practice, and a comprehensive understanding of healthcare challenges. Clinically, the institution is home to state-of-the-art hospitals and healthcare facilities fostering a patient-centered approach in its care. A culture of inquiry and scientific exploration has led to ground-breaking research initiatives which contribute to national and global medical knowledge and state of the art practice.
